Kraft paper is an outer layer, not a barrier. We build kraft laminates for coffee, tea, snacks and organic food — and specify the inner structure against what the product actually needs, so the natural look does not quietly cost you shelf life.
The paper is the surface. Something else is doing the work
The most common misconception about kraft packaging is that choosing it is a single decision. It is two. The outer kraft layer decides how the pack looks and feels; the inner layers decide what the pack can protect. A kraft pack with a poor barrier and a plain film pack with a good one can look completely different and perform identically badly — or well. This page separates the two so you can specify each on purpose.
The visible fibre texture reads as uncoated and honest, which is why natural and organic brands gravitate to it.
Kraft is not white. Colours shift against it and light inks behave differently — the substrate changes your artwork, not the other way round.
Oxygen and moisture control is provided by the film or foil layers beneath the paper, never by the kraft layer itself.
A paper and plastic laminate is a mixed-material structure. If recyclability is a goal, select the structure for it deliberately and verify it.
Texture influences how a product is perceived before it is opened — a real, if hard to measure, part of the premium argument.
The product-contact layer must meet the food-contact requirements of your market. Ask for the declarations that apply to you.
Categories where the material tone supports the product story
The most established kraft application. Note that roasted coffee usually needs a one-way degassing valve regardless of the outer material.
Loose leaf and specialty tea, where the kraft look suits the category and fill weights are moderate.
Cookies, granola, dried fruit and bakery items where the pack is often sold alongside the product itself.
Grains, pulses, seeds and health foods, where kraft aligns with the positioning rather than fighting it.
Treat and natural pet food ranges that borrow the same natural-look language as human food.
Where a natural look is wanted and the food-contact requirement does not apply — the structure rules change accordingly.

Kraft is a material choice; the pouch format is a separate one
A structured base that stands on shelf — the format most kraft coffee packs use.
The most widely used pouch format, available in kraft laminates for smaller fill weights.
If recyclability is the actual objective, the structure matters more than the surface material — this article explains why.
A practical warning we give every kraft buyer: do not let the material decision be made before the barrier decision. It is common for a brand to choose kraft for its look, then discover the product needed a barrier the chosen structure could not provide — and by then the artwork has been approved. Tell us the product and the target shelf life first, and we will tell you which kraft structures can actually deliver it.
